What exams do you have to pass to be an instructor?

You have to pass three exams:

  1. Part 1 is the theory test, lasts approx. 1 hour 45 minutes, covering both multiple choice and hazard perception (Unlimited attempts)
  2. Part 2 is the driving test, again lasting approx. 1 hour, you must have no serious or dangerous faults and commit no more than 6 minor driving faults (Maximum 3 attempts
  3. Part 3 is the instructional part, again lasting approx. 1 hour; you will be tested in two half hour phases. In the first phase the examiner will role-play a "Pupil" who is at the early stages of learning to drive. In the second phase the examiner will role-play a pupil who is at or near test standard. In both cases you must demonstrate an appropriate level of instruction to suit the needs of the pupil. You must also identify, analyse the cause of and rectify driver faults. In other words you must improve the "pupil" (Maximum 3 attempts). If you fail on your 3rd and final attempt for Part II or Part III you must wait for a 2 year period from the date of passing your theory test before starting the whole process all over again. Part III must be passed within a 2 year period of passing Part I.

How is the training scheduled?

Trainees need time to absorb new information and develop skills. This is why we spread out the training for Part 2 and Part 3 over several weeks on a part-time basis and start it at the same time as you are doing home study for Part 1. Theory can be learnt relatively quickly, but real skill takes time and practice to evolve. We also heavily supplement your in-car tutor training with extensive video examples and a series of carefully planned practical exercises for you to undertake between each session. This flexibility enables us to adapt the course time to suit your individual requirements.
